Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
